Here at Sustaina Grow you know we are passionate about sustainability and wool and when it comes to gardening all wool is the perfect wool for your garden.
We have had the opportunity to make a select run of our 100% Wool Mulch Mats with Black Wool, which is considered an inferior wool when it comes to use in other industries such as textiles. But, as far as we are concerned as long as its 100% wool its 100% good for the garden so we are thrilled to be utilizing this awesome product and contributing to a zero waste future. In fact, we believe that the heat-attracting attributes of black wool will be great over winter as you get hardy seedlings established during the colder months.
We are offering these at a special price as they aren’t as perfect as our standard mulch mats, but they still do the trick of protecting your plants and helping to retain moisture in the garden in the dryer months.
These 100% Black Wool Mulch Mats are a natural way to deter slugs and snails from your tender young plants when they are getting established. We love using them to protect our young and vulnerable Dahlia tubers as they finally start to sprout.
When applied around your Dahlia tubers, mulch mats contain minute fibres that irritate the slugs and prevent them from reaching the plant. They also add nutrients to the soil and lock in moisture.

The mats contain naturally occurring slow release nutrients such as nitrogen, potassium, sulfur and other trace elements essential for your plants to grow.
Wool stores up to 33% of its weight in water, and slowly releases water once the surrounding environment drops below 65% relative humidity. This means our mats act as a water buffer, keeping plants at the right moisture level. As wool absorbs water, it releases a small amount of heat, helping to regulate the soil temperature and provide ideal growing conditions for your Dahlias to bloom.
Alternative chemical slug repellents are toxic to our environment, ecosystem, pets and children.
The mulch mats are approximately 20cm x 20cm for the medium or 30cm x 30cm for the large, but most are slightly bigger. They are also a minimum of 800gsm but again some are thicker. Please note these aren’t quite as perfect as our normal mulch mats but the pricing reflects this and they will still do their job!
